What Reverse Osmosis Does

Reverse osmosis removes dissolved contaminants from water using a semi-permeable membrane. When water is pressurised against the membrane, pure water molecules pass through while dissolved salts, heavy metals, microplastics, pesticides and other contaminants are carried away in the waste stream.

A properly sized commercial RO system can remove up to 99% of dissolved solids, including lead, copper, arsenic, nitrates, fluoride and microplastics. This makes it the most effective single-stage treatment for producing high-purity drinking water from any source.

How Commercial RO Works

Commercial RO works in stages. First, water passes through a sediment pre-filter to remove particulates that could clog the membrane. Then it passes through a carbon filter to remove chlorine, which would damage the membrane. The water then enters the RO membrane housing, where a pressure pump pushes it through the semi-permeable membrane.

Pure water (permeate) collects in a storage tank or flows directly through the system, depending on the model. The remaining concentrated water (brine) carries the removed contaminants away to waste. Finally, the permeate passes through a post-filtration stage — often a remineralisation filter — which adds back small amounts of beneficial minerals and adjusts the pH before the water reaches the point of use.

A commercial RO system does not replace softening or filtration. It addresses dissolved contaminants specifically, while a softener addresses hardness minerals and a filter addresses particulates and chlorine.

A water softener removes calcium and magnesium. A sediment filter removes sand, silt and rust particles. A carbon filter removes chlorine and taste issues. Membrane Life and Maintenance
