Why treat your water in the UK?

British tap water is among the safest in the world. But across most of southern and eastern England it is also very hard, and hardness is what costs your business money.

01 · Your supply

Where British water actually comes from

UK mains water starts as rainfall. Around 60% of England's supply comes from surface water (rivers and reservoirs) and roughly a third from underground aquifers. What happens next depends on the rock it passes through: rain filtering through chalk and limestone dissolves calcium and magnesium. That is hard water, and it defines supply across London, the South East and East Anglia.

02 · The cost

Hard water is a business cost, not an inconvenience

London sits on the Thames chalk basin, with some of the hardest water of any major city in Europe; Cambridge, Ipswich, Norwich and Peterborough are comparable. In a kitchen, café or office, that hardness comes out as limescale on every heating element you own. Scale is an insulator: a coated boiler, dishwasher, combi oven, ice machine or espresso head works harder, fails sooner and costs more to run.

03 · The right system

The right treatment depends on the job

There is no single answer, and anyone who says otherwise is selling you something. Softening protects heating equipment, filtration handles taste, chlorine and particulates, reverse osmosis goes further for coffee and food production, and UV disinfects without chemicals. What your site needs depends on your supply, equipment and what you produce. That is a specification job, not a shopping decision, and it is what we do.

How our systems work

Inside a multi-stage treatment system.

A commercial system is a sequence, not a single box. Each stage does one job, and what you need depends on what your mains supply arrives carrying.

  1. 01

    Pre-filter

    Sediment / cotton-wound

Catches sand, silt, rust and scale particles down to around 5 microns, protecting every stage downstream from clogging and wear.

  2. 02

    Activated carbon

    Taste & chlorine

Strips chlorine, chloramine and odours, removing the off-tastes municipal water carries and shielding the RO membrane that follows.

  3. 03

    Softener

    Scale protection

Ion-exchange removes the calcium and magnesium that make water hard, stopping limescale in boilers, espresso machines and ice makers.

  4. 04

    Reverse osmosis

    Ultra-pure water

A semi-permeable membrane removes up to 99% of dissolved solids, giving the clean, neutral base water baristas need for consistent extraction.

  5. 05

    Remineralisation

    Balanced for taste

Adds back a controlled balance of minerals for flavour, pH and crema, turning flat RO water into perfectly profiled water for coffee and food.

Common questions

Why you may need to treat your water.

Water quality varies by location and source, impacting taste, safety and equipment. A few of the questions we hear most.

QWhat do you recommend for coffee shops?
Typically a combination of pre-filtration, reverse osmosis for pure water, and a softener to prevent scale in espresso machines, ensuring consistent taste. We'll run a water-quality test and advise on the exact setup for your site.
QCan I fit reverse osmosis under my sink?
Yes, our Sovereign RO under-sink systems are designed for standard kitchen cabinets, delivering ultra-pure drinking water from a dedicated tap with minimal footprint.
QDo you supply office water dispensers?
Yes. We supply, plumb in and service mains-fed drinking-water taps and dispensers from brands like ZIP, Borg & Overström and BRITA, boiling, chilled, sparkling and ambient, so you can stop buying bottled water. We can pair them with our own filtration to suit the UK's water.
QHow often should filters be changed?
It depends on your water and usage, but most filters are changed every 6-12 months. With Comprehensive Maintenance we track filter life and send replacements before performance drops.
QAre products designed and made in the UK?
Our systems are British-engineered and European-manufactured, built to UK and EU water-quality standards for reliability and full compliance.
QDo you support multiple locations?
Yes, we support chains and multi-site businesses with standardised specifications, centralised monitoring and coordinated servicing across every location.
QDo you work across the Gulf?
We supply and support customers across the UK, the wider GCC and beyond through our international distribution network.
QIs filtered tap water as good as bottled?
For taste and purity, yes. Filtered and remineralised mains water matches or beats bottled, at a fraction of the cost and with no plastic waste. We can run a water test to show the difference for your site.
